Empty Leg

An empty leg (deadhead) is a repositioning flight sold at a discount because the aircraft flies anyway — recurring charter revenue that expires daily and is hard to monetise.

An empty leg (also called a deadhead) is a repositioning flight an aircraft must make without paying passengers — flying home after a drop-off, or repositioning to collect a charter. Because the aircraft is flying anyway, operators sell these legs at a discount. For charter operators, empty legs are recurring revenue that expires daily, which makes monetising them a genuine marketing problem rather than a pricing afterthought.

Three structural problems make empty legs hard to sell. Fragmentation: each Part 135 operator generates a handful of legs at a time, so no single operator ever has enough inventory to look like a marketplace. Staleness: a leg exists only until the client on either side of it changes plans, so most listings are hours from irrelevant. Discount anchoring: customers who first meet an operator through a 40-percent-off deadhead often anchor there, which is why some operators deliberately keep empty legs off their main charter pages.

Third-party platforms and alert lists aggregate some of this inventory, but aggregation doesn't fix staleness — a traveller who checks a listing site and finds expired legs stops checking. What holds value better is an owned alert list: email or SMS to people who asked to hear about legs from one operator's fleet, with an honest disclaimer that availability is contingent on the schedule either side. The operator keeps the margin and, more importantly, the customer relationship.

The marketing angle is that empty-leg searchers are high-intent charter buyers doing research — the people comparing 'empty leg' deals today are the same people booking full-fare charter next quarter. An operator publishing a current empty-leg page, running its own alert list, and retargeting page visitors captures that intent instead of donating it to an aggregator.
